I just finished my final project for Jour 4720.  This project we did in groups of four which is actually the first time I have worked in a group in a journalism class.  I was in a really great group and I feel that we all contributed a an equal amount to the project and worked really hard and well together.  It was nice to take all the little lessons and assignments we’ve done this semester  and put them together to make this web page.  I have learned so much in this class and I would highly reccommend it to anyone interested in PhotoJ or Multimedia.

My First Video November 10, 2008

I just made my first video and I’m really excited about it.  It took a lot of time and a lot of work, but I did it.  I shot and edited a story about a lady, Threeca Vandagriff, who makes quilts out of t-shirts.  She is a very interesting lady and I just fell in love with her.  There are a couple of things I’m sure I could do to make this video better, but for my first one it turned out pretty good.

NY Times: Election Story November 10, 2008

I watched this video for my Jour 4720 class today.  I think it is a very good multimedia story covering the 2008 election.  It covers the whole election starting back when Clinton was still in the running to the closing speeches after the new president was announced.  It tells their personal stories of how they got nominated and about their journeys through the whole election.  It uses very good video, photos, audio, music and graphics all edited together very nicely.  Even if your not interested in elections, this piece grabs you and makes you want to keep watching the whole thing.  It is pretty much the coolest multimedia video I’ve ever seen on the Web.  It is amazing!!!  I think is was edited in Final Cut, then put on the Web using Flash.

Political Pictures November 10, 2008

Our assignment was to take some political pictures for the 2008 election. This was a fun experience for me because I have never really gotten into an election until this year.  This has been the most controversial and diverse election ever, starting with Hilary Clinton as a candidate.  Of course there are many McCain supporters in Texas, but surprisingly there is a lot more diversity of Obama supporters than I expected.   My first picture is of the many election signs along the road outside the Fair Grounds where McCain is clearly the front runner.  My next picture is an Obama supporter taking a smoke break at a debate watching party.  My last picture is of another Obama supported putting up signs in front of her house to show her support.

My First Soundslide October 6, 2008

So I made my first soundslide.  It was my first time to use audio and make a slide show with my pictures so I wasn’t really sure what to do.  After looking at my other classmates work I realized that my work really isn’t up to par.  I had a lot of fun making it, but I guess I will just call this my learning experience. :)  I guess you can’t be good all the time.  But now I know what to do so my next one will be SO much better.

The Halifax Explosion

http://www.cba.ca/halifaxexplosion/index.html

Overall, I would say this Web site has efficient and effective graphics, audio, video, photos, and text.  The tabs are well labeled which makes it easy to navigate and find the information you are looking for.  There is a good balance between the photos, graphics, and text.  The mixture of color on the black and white photos give them and interesting take which helps to draw in people.  Also, the map on the Web site gives a more thorough explanation of the locations which suffered from the event and there is also a timeline to break down the event in detail.

The Churchill Speeches

http://www.churchillspeeches.com

This Website is not as good as the other one, however it is very diverse.  It allows more users to learn about the speeches because not every one has sound or can play videos one their computer.  This website gives you the option of listening to Churchill’s speech or reading it.  There is kind of an overload of information in the speech, but you can look at a timeline of photos while listening so it makes it easier to follow along and understand.

Burglary of a Celebrity Parrot

http://www.dallasnews.com/video/?z=y&nvid=276754

After Reading the Angela Grant article I found a video of the burglary of a parrot caught on tape.  This videos show good movement of how the two men stole the bird.  I think that people would be interested in this because we are naturally drawn to crimes and this is the actual live feed of what really happened.  Also, most people have a soft spot for animals, so I think this video tends to be a little emotional for some people too, especially for the people who knew the parrot.

Goals for 4720 August 25, 2008

I am very excited to begin my Jour. 4720 class.  I hope to learn a lot this semester.  I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to audio and computer so most importantly I want to learn the basics on how to use the different equipment and programs.  I feel that this class will help me build a better resume and give me a better chance of getting a job by me being more well-rounded.  I want to branch out and learn a lot of other areas of journalism than just photography.  This class seems like fun and I am ready to get started!  :)
